Candied Yams
Ingredients
Yams
- 3 large yams, peeled and sliced into 1/2‑inch thick rounds
Syrup
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 6 tbsp butter
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
Optional Garnish
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the brown sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer.
- Spread the yam slices in a single layer, turning them to coat fully in the syrup.
- Cover, reduce heat to medium‑low, and cook for 20 minutes, stirring and turning occasionally.
- Remove the lid, raise heat to medium, and cook another 10–15 minutes, spooning syrup over the yams until they are fork‑tender and the glaze is thick and glossy.
- Stir in vanilla, transfer to a serving dish, and sprinkle with pecans if desired.
- Serve immediately.
