Candied Yams

Candied Yams

Ingredients

Yams

  • 3 large yams, peeled and sliced into 1/2‑inch thick rounds

Syrup

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 6 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Optional Garnish

  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the brown sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture begins to simmer.
  3. Spread the yam slices in a single layer, turning them to coat fully in the syrup.
  4. Cover, reduce heat to medium‑low, and cook for 20 minutes, stirring and turning occasionally.
  5. Remove the lid, raise heat to medium, and cook another 10–15 minutes, spooning syrup over the yams until they are fork‑tender and the glaze is thick and glossy.
  6. Stir in vanilla, transfer to a serving dish, and sprinkle with pecans if desired.
  7. Serve immediately.
